Who It’s For

Most linear gas fireplaces make no secret of being gas: a straight ribbon of flame over a bed of glass or stone. It’s warm, and it’s handsome, but nobody mistakes it for a wood fire. You need a fire that reads as burning wood at the scale of a modern linear fireplace. What Makes It Special

The Wilderness burner is Ortal’s answer to the ribbon flame. Fire rises through and around a stacked ceramic log set five feet wide, so the flames move and flicker the way a hearth fire does instead of standing in a straight line. The glass is nearly two feet tall, and interior lighting comes built in—the logs read like a laid fire even when it isn’t burning.

You also choose how the heat comes through. The protective screen is a fine metal mesh that’s nearly invisible in front of the glass. The double-glass front adds a second pane with near-silent fans between them, keeping the outer glass below the 172°F safety standard—cooler to be near while the fire’s warmth still reaches the room. Either way, the remote holds the room at the temperature you set, cycling the fire on its own.
