Who It’s For

Most fireplaces face one direction, so in an open floor plan half the seats get a view of the fire and the other half get a view of the cabinet beside it. You feel it most on the nights the whole room is full. You need a fire that turns the corner and shows itself to both sides at once. If you’re building or remodeling an open living space and want one fireplace to anchor all of it, the Ortal Wilderness Corner 77 is that fireplace—a zero-clearance unit built into a framed wall, so it belongs in new construction or a remodel. Choose a flat, front-facing unit instead and one side of the room will always be looking at drywall.

What Makes It Special

The Wilderness burner is Ortal’s answer to the oldest complaint about gas fires: they look like gas fires. Ceramic driftwood logs sit in and around the flame the way real wood does, so the fire reads as a hearth fire, not an appliance—and at this size that’s over six feet of driftwood fire running down the wall and around the corner.

Where the two panes of glass meet, there’s no metal post or seam—nothing interrupts the view where the fire turns. From the kitchen you see the long side; from the couch, the short side; from the doorway, both. The fire is the corner.

You also choose how the fire is faced. The protective screen is a metal mesh so fine it’s almost invisible. The double glass adds a second pane with silent fans moving air between the layers, so the outer glass stays cooler to the touch—the choice for a house with kids or a busy room.

Possible Downsides

• Long driftwood is the only log style at this size; the chopped wood and dark brown sets stop at the smaller Wilderness models.
• The double glass front needs household power, so it won’t run during an outage.
• This is the right-hand corner version; if your glass needs to wrap the other way, there’s a left-side model.
