A flat fireplace faces one wall, so from half the seats in the room you’re looking at the side of the cabinetry, not the flame. You need a fire you can see from two sides, not one. What makes it special

The fire itself is the point. Ortal’s Wilderness burner sets the flame through a full ceramic log set so it reads as a real wood fire, not a row of gas flames—from across the room it looks like a fire someone just built, without the hauling, tending, or ash.

Then there’s the shape. Frameless glass turns the right corner, so there’s no metal post where the two panes meet—just fire, visible from two directions at once. The taller-glass versions also include interior lighting, so the log set shows even when the flame is off.

Because a corner unit sits where people walk past it, the barrier matters. The optional double glass adds a second pane so clear you won’t notice it, with quiet hidden fans that keep the outer glass under 172°F—far cooler than a single-pane fireplace. Prefer the standard route, and a nearly invisible protective screen does the job instead.

Possible downsides
